NRA president: ?We?d be in prison? if NRA carried guns illegally like Media Matters [VIDEO]

WASHINGTON ? The president of the National Rifle Association says that the media are guilty of a huge double standard by ignoring news that a staffer at the left-wing Media Matters organization carried multiple weapons illegally in the District of Columbia.

In an interview with The Daily Caller?s Ginni Thomas, NRA president David Keene said Tuesday that members of his group would be jailed and plastered across the front of The Washington Post if an NRA staffer were caught with an illegal weapon in Washington.

?The whole [Media Matters president] David Brock episode is symptomatic of the way people like him look at society. If I had a firearm, legal or illegal, he?d be horrified. But of course, his people are the good people. Just like the people in the government are the good people. So it?s OK to arm them, regardless of the laws,? said Keene. (RELATED: Media Matters provided illegal weapons to protect founder)

Keene insisted that the NRA comes under dramatically tougher scrutiny.

?We?ve seen this time and again. You know, if I were to raise my voice against one of these people, they would say I should apologize, I should do all this,? said Keene.

?You can go on the internet today and find a ?Kill David Keene? game where you get to shoot me and my head blows up. There?s not one politician who?s criticized that,? he went on.

?What if I did that to Mayor Bloomberg?? Keene wondered. ?They?d demand that I be hauled off to jail.?

?If I did what David Gregory did and held up a magazine in the District of Columbia, I?d be in jail today,? he added, referring to an incident in which the host of NBC?s ?Meet the Press? illegally held up a high-capacity magazine as a prop during the Sunday show.

?If I did, or any of our people did what David Brock?s people did, we?d be in prison. And it remains to be seen whether he and his friends will be,? Keene said.

Keene went on to blame the press for playing favorites and deciding ahead of time to protect media-selected ?good guys? from scrutiny.

?[T]hink about the press coverage. Think about the front page of The Washington Post if it was revealed that the president of the National Rifle Association or somebody with him was in the District of Columbia with an illegal firearm,? Keene hypothesized.

?That would be a banner headline in The Washington Post. But for these folks, it?s something we?re going to put under the rug because they?re the good guys.?

?They?re not the good guys,? Keene concluded. ?They?re the people who think the world is designed just for them and that everyone else is a second-class citizen.?

Canada's Metro profits rise, warns of "challenging" market

(Reuters) - Shares of Canada's Metro Inc slipped on Tuesday after the supermarket and drugstore chain warned of tough economic conditions and rising competition, despite reporting higher quarterly profits.

The chain, which is bracing for the opening of the first Target Corp stores north of the border this spring, posted higher earnings on rising sales and profit margins. It pointed out that the timing of its fiscal first quarter ended December 22 flattered the results. Unlike the comparable quarter a year earlier, the latest period included most of the final week of the Christmas shopping season.

Shares of Metro, which operates more than 600 food stores and more than 250 drugstores in Canada, slipped more than 1 percent even though Metro announced a 16 percent increase in its quarterly dividend after the market closed on Tuesday.

In a statement accompanying the results, Chief Executive Eric La Fleche said the current economic environment was "challenging" and consumers were cautious.

Along with rivals such as Loblaw Cos Ltd , Metro is facing rising competition as Wal-Mart Stores Inc expands its grocery offerings in Canada. Target Corp , the No. 2 U.S. discounter, will also sell groceries when it begins opening its first 124 Canadian stores in March or April.

Metro's net earnings rose to C$121.4 million ($120.9 million), or C$1.23 a share, from C$103.7 million, or C$1.01, a year earlier. Sales rose 2.7 percent to C$2.70 billion.

Analysts had expected earnings of C$1.15 on sales of C$2.76 billion, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Sales at established stores, an important indicator for retailers, rose 1.5 percent in the fiscal first quarter.

Late on Monday, the Montreal-based firm declared a dividend of 25 Canadian cents a share, up from 21.5 Canadian cents last quarter.

NO DEAL HINTS

Last week, Metro said it would sell nearly half its stake in Alimentation Couche-Tard Inc , a convenience store and gasoline station operator, for nearly C$479 million.

Safeway Inc's stock jumped after the announcement, as investors bet that Metro might consider buying the U.S.-based grocery chain's Canadian operations.

But Tuesday's release offered no information on how Metro might use the proceeds from the sale of the Couche-Tard stake.

In its initial statement, La Fleche said Metro made the decision based on Couche-Tard's market value. The stock had risen more than 60 percent over 12 months.

"We are evaluating opportunities for the use of proceeds, including investments for growth and returns to shareholders," he said at the time.

Metro's stock was down 1.3 percent at C$63.32 on Tuesday afternoon on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

Suppliers, grocers turning to DNA testing on meat

(AP) ? Ireland's surprise discovery this month of horsemeat traces in factory-produced burgers is boosting business for one trade: Forensics labs that use DNA fingerprinting to tell you what's on your plate.

Horsemeat, which costs a fraction of beef, might not be bad for you to eat but it's definitely bad for sales of products that are labeled as beef.

Until now, supermarkets and food processors have not used DNA testing to determine whether food products marked as chicken, pork, beef, lamb or fish contain bits of other animals. Experts say that's because such findings don't affect food safety, only the integrity of labeling.

But a growing list of food processors and retailers say they will introduce such testing after the Food Safety Authority of Ireland ? seeking to confirm whether food labels on meat and fish are accurate ? used DNA testing to show that even "pure" processed meat products often contain traces of other animals slaughtered in the same facilities or carried in the same vehicles.

Worse, the agency's testing found that bargain-brand burgers produced at the Silvercrest food processing plant for sale by British supermarket king Tesco contained up to 29 percent horsemeat, a revelation that government and Silvercrest officials have pinned this week to a meat supplier from Poland.

Catherine Brown, chief executive of Britain's Food Standards Agency, told London lawmakers on Wednesday that the undisclosed Polish firm supplied frozen blocks of offcuts ? slaughterhouse leftovers ? that were labeled as "beef trim" but actually were a mixture of cow and horse.

Brown said consumers in Britain and Ireland may have been eating horsemeat-heavy burgers for up to a year.

And compounding that impression, another British supermarket chain, the Co-operative Group, announced Wednesday its own DNA testing had found 17.7 percent horsemeat in one of 17 burger products pulled from its shelves earlier this month as a precaution. It blamed Silvercrest and immediately severed its supply contract with the company.

In Dublin, the government has also declined to identify the Polish company. Irish lawmakers accused Silvercrest of endangering the integrity of Irish meat exports by using ill-labeled imports to boost their profit margins.

Beef is Ireland's No. 1 food export, and Tesco is Ireland's No. 1 customer, accounting for nearly one-tenth of the country's annual ?1.9 billion ($2.5 billion) in beef exports.

"I want to know how much Silvercrest paid for these boxes of 'beef trim' and if they paid below-market price for the meat," said Irish Senator Susan O'Keeffe.

"Most importantly, I want to know why Silvercrest thought it was appropriate to put 'beef trim' bought in Poland into burgers and label them Irish. I want to know what 'beef trim' is meant to be and how often other meats are added to 'beef trim' to bulk it up," she said.

Tesco, which saw its shares slump following the horsemeat discovery, has announced it will become the first supermarket chain to perform DNA tests on its meat products. Hours later, a second UK chain called Iceland that also received Silvercrest burgers tainted with traces of horse and pig meat said it also planned to start DNA testing.

"These checks will set a new standard," Tesco, the largest grocer in both Britain and Ireland, said in a statement. "We want to leave customers in no doubt that that we will do whatever it takes to ensure the quality of their food and that the food they buy is exactly what the label says it is."

Industry analysts expect other supermarket chains in Europe to follow suit, because the cross-contamination detected in Ireland is likely to happen in processed meat products worldwide.

While government authorities in Spain have yet to conduct such tests, the Spanish consumer rights watchdog OCU announced this week it had commissioned DNA tests on 20 factory-made burger products ? and found two that contained horsemeat. The OCU tests could only identify the presence of equine DNA, not its quantity.

Ireland conducted the DNA tests in one of its own labs, which found the presence of horsemeat, and sent the samples to a more sophisticated lab in Germany to break down the precise quantities of each species of meat in each sample burger.

"This sort of species testing simply has not been done in other nations. It looks like that's going to change," said Patrick Wall, the professor of public health at University College Dublin and former chairman of the Food Safety Authority for the 27-nation European Union.

Silvercrest supplied most of the supermarket chains in Ireland and Britain. After the Irish findings Jan. 15, Silvercrest withdrew about 10 million burgers from those stores. It suspended all production a week later once a second round of DNA tests found more horsemeat traces in recently produced burgers.

Silvercrest's parent company, ABP Food Group, said in a statement it understood Tesco's decision and would introduce its own random DNA testing of products at all of its facilities in Ireland and Britain. Other Irish processors say they plan to follow suit.

Food policy experts say meat labels may eventually be changed in many countries to reflect the kind of warnings already familiar for people allergic to nuts: This beef product may contain traces of other animals.

Wall said consumers shouldn't be unduly unsettled by the Irish findings, which included results showing that most cheaply produced "beef" burgers also contained minute elements of pork. He said such molecular transfers were almost impossible to prevent though, until now they hadn't been measured.

"People need to understand how sensitive these DNA tests are," Wall said. "This thing will pick up molecules. So if horsemeat traveled in a refrigerated lorry one day and beef was carried in it the next day, molecules would travel over."

He also said if both horse and beef were processed at the same facility "you could get a carry-over of molecules."

Cats kill billions of creatures every year according to new study

According to the research, published today (Jan. 29) in the journal Nature Communications, cats kill between 1.4 billion and 3.7 billion birds and between 6.9 billion and 20.7 billion small mammals, such as meadow voles and chipmunks.

Though it's hard to know exactly how many birds live in the United States, the staggering number of bird deaths may account for as much as 15 percent of the total bird population, said study co-author Pete Marra, an animal ecologist with the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute.

Staggering toll

Marra and his colleagues are looking at human-related causes for bird and wildlife deaths in the country, from windmills and glass windows to?pesticides.

But first, Marra and his team looked at the impact of the feline population, one of the biggest putative causes of bird demise in the country. ? ? ??

While past studies had used?critter cams?or owner reports to estimate the number of birds killed by cats, those studies were usually small and not applicable to the entire country, Marra told LiveScience.

For this broader analysis, the team first looked at all prior studies on bird deaths and estimated that around 84 million owned-cats live in the country, many of which are allowed outdoors. [In Photos: America's Favorite Pets]

"A lot of these cats may go outside and go to 10 different houses, but they go back to their house and cuddle up on Mr. Smith's lap at night," Marra said.

Based on an analysis of past studies, the researchers estimated that each of those felines killed between four and 18 birds a year, and between eight and 21 small mammals per year.

But the major scourges for wildlife were not those free-ranging, owned-cats, but instead feral and un-owned cats that survive on the streets. Each of those kitties ? and the team estimates between 30 million and 80 million of them live in the United States ? kills between 23 and 46 birds a year, and between 129 and 338 small mammals, Marra said.

And, it seems, the small rodents taken by felines aren't Norway rats or apartment vermin, but native?rodent species?such as meadow voles and chipmunks, he added.

No easy answers

One obvious step to reduce the mass wildlife death is to keep kitties indoors, Marra said.

Perhaps seeing their furry friends bring in a meadow vole or a cardinal will spur cat owners to say, "Listen,?Tabby, we're going to have a heart-to-heart talk about how much time you spend outside," he said.

Wild cats pose tougher questions, because capture and sterilization approaches have varying levels of success depending on the community, said Bruce Kornreich, a veterinarian at Cornell University's Feline Health Center, who was not involved in the study.

While keeping owned-cats indoors is the best way to benefit both kitties and wildlife, a?complete cat ban, like the one recently proposed in New Zealand, is probably not the answer, he said.

For one, it's not clear how?completely removing cats?from outdoors would affect the ecosystem.

"It may be in some cases that cats may also be keeping other species that may negatively impact bird and other small mammal populations in check," Kornreich told LiveScience.

The bounty case essentially is over, but bits and pieces of evidence continue to surface.

More than a few bits and pieces have come from the disclosure of a significant portion of the appeal hearing testimony from former Saints interim head coach and current linebackers coach Joe Vitt.

Among many other things, Vitt?s testimony before former Commissioner Paul Tagliabue sheds light on some of the contentious aspects of the relationship between the league office and the organization.? Vitt says that, at one point, Saints owner Tom Benson told NFL V.P. of security Jeff Miller to leave the premises.

?Jeff Miller took a plane ride from New York down to New Orleans, and the way he talked to our owner, what he said to our owner made me want to throw up, to the point where Mr. Benson kicked him off the property and didn?t let him back on the property,? Vitt said, via the New Orleans Times-Picayune.

?This almost killed our owner.? Our owner has done nothing but be a great owner in the National Football League the whole time he?s been in the league. . . .? And now this guy takes a plane ride down and throws some documents in front of our owner?s face, and our owner has got to kick him out of the building?? That?s what we?re dealing with.? That?s fine.?

Vitt also explained that, even though notes generated by former Saints assistant Mike Cerullo indicated that Vitt had offered $5,000 to the alleged bounty on former Vikings quarterback Brett Favre, Miller didn?t believe it happened.

?The investigators, Jeff Miller in particular, acknowledged that I did not give any money to a bounty because he said to me, you know, we heard that your wife is so cheap that you have a hard time getting lunch money every day,? Vitt said.? ?That was his comment to me.? And I said, well, your wife must have a pretty good sense of humor, too, with the clothes you?re wearing right now.?

Vitt also had some strong comments for Cerullo.

?Mike Cerullo is a liar,? Vitt said. ?We?ll get some notes here from Mr. Cerullo. I?ll say this to you, Commissioner, and anybody that?s interested. I?m taking Mike Cerullo to court.? I?m going to sue his ass for the things he said about me, the things he said about this football team.? He?s going to be held accountable for everything he said. I make this offer again.? If we want me to take a lie detector test this afternoon, I will do so.? Or if you want me to do it tomorrow morning or tomorrow afternoon, I will do so. Mike Cerullo is a liar.? A liar.?

Vitt also talked at length regarding coach Sean Payton?s decision after the 2011 season to part ways with defensive coordinator Gregg Williams.? Payton began to sour on Williams after the head coach caught Williams texting draft picks to the media during the 2011 selection process.

?I would say the final straw was the last two weeks of the season,? Vitt said.? ?Gregg kept coming to Sean every day and wanted his contract extension and wanted his extension done.? And Sean said, well, we?ll talk about it at the end of the season, well knowing what direction Sean was going in.? And the last week of the season, it?s all in the papers, you know, Gregg has gone to St. Louis, it?s his best friend Jeff Fisher, you know, ba-boom, ba-boom, ba-boom, trying to squeeze Sean, trying to squeeze Mickey to get his contract.? And the day after the playoff game that we lost against San Francisco, he went into Sean?s office and says I need to know right now, I need my contract, I?ve got to let Jeff know what I?m doing.? And Sean said, you?re not going to get a contract here.? I think it?s best go to St. Louis with your friend Jeff. And that was it. . . .? It didn?t end pretty. It didn?t end nice.?

There isn?t much nice or pretty about Vitt?s testimony, but it?s compelling and interesting and he has the kind of passion that typically is exhibited by a guy who has been accused of things he didn?t do.

Egypt army chief warns of 'collapse of the state'

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's army chief warned Tuesday of the "the collapse of the state" if the political crisis roiling the nation for nearly a week continues.

The warning by Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, who is also defense minister, were the first comments by the powerful military since the country's latest crisis began last week around the second anniversary of Egypt's uprising. They came days after President Mohammed Morsi ordered the army to restore order in the Suez Canal cities of Port Said and Suez ? two of three cities now under a 30-day state of emergency and night curfew.

The attempts by Morsi to stem a wave of political violence appear to have made no headway as the country sinks deeper into chaos and lawlessness. So far, nearly 60 people have been killed in five days of unrest.

"The continuation of the conflict between the different political forces and their differences over how the country should be run could lead to the collapse of the state and threaten future generations," el-Sissi said in an address to military academy cadets. His comments were posted on the armed forces' official Facebook page.

On Sunday night, Morsi slapped a monthlong state of emergency and a night curfew on Port Said, Suez and Ismailiya, another city on the Suez canal.

Nevertheless, troops stood by and watched Monday night as thousands took to the streets chanting against Morsi in all three cities in direct defiance of the curfew just as it came into force for the first night at 9 p.m. The display of contempt for the president's decision was tantamount to an outright rebellion that many worried could spread.

Some of the demonstrators in Port Said waved white-and-green flags they said were the colors of a "new and independent state" in the city. Such a secession would be unthinkable in Egypt, but the move underlined the depth of frustration in the strategic city on the Mediterranean coast at the northern tip of the Suez Canal.

El-Sissi, who was named defense minister in August, acknowledged the difficult challenges facing his troops in the cities where they deployed.

"The deployment of the armed forces poses a grave predicament for us insofar as how we balance avoiding confrontations with Egyptian citizens, their right to protest and the protection and security of vital facilities that impact Egypt's national security," he said.

Morsi is the first freely elected president in Egypt. But since coming to office nearly seven months ago, he has failed to tackle the country's massive political, social and economic problems ranging from an economy in free fall to surging crime, chaos on the streets and lack of political consensus.

The wave of unrest has touched cities across the country since Thursday, including Cairo, the three Suez Canal cities, Alexandria on the Mediterranean in the north and a string of cities in the Nile Delta.

The violence first erupted Thursday and accelerated Friday when protests marking the two-year anniversary of the 2001 uprising turned to clashes around the country that left 11 dead, most of them in Suez.

The next day, riots exploded in Port Said after a court convicted and sentenced to death 21 defendants ? mostly locals ? for a mass soccer riot in the city's main stadium a year ago. Rioters attacked police stations, clashed with security forces in the streets and shots and tear gas were fired at protester funerals in mayhem that left 44 people dead over the weekend.

Anna Almendrala: Mixed Weight Relationships: No One Prepared ...

Before I married Simon, I thought I was being savvy by identifying which land mines would most likely contribute to our potential divorce.

Money was a big one. He came from a family that could buy a Lexus with straight cash and I came from a family that went into credit card debt so I could go to UC Berkeley. Religion was another. When Simon told his father he intended to propose, he got a big talk about the importance of raising our non-existent children to be secular Jews (I'm Christian). When we got engaged, my parents asked their pastor whether Jews go to heaven (they do, because they have their own deal with God, so phew...). There was also the race factor -- which is actually not a big deal in minority-majority California and has so far produced only playful mock-fights over whether I can name any of my future sons Jose, Andres or Emilio after the fathers of the Filipino revolution.

But after almost three years of marriage, coming from different economic backgrounds and being a mixed-race, mixed-faith couple isn't what is producing the majority of our fights.

Instead, it's a subject that no one prepared us for: my weight.

It's a relief to know that other mixed-weight couples are going through the same things we are. Last week, Al Roker wrote about his own mixed-weight marriage and included just one direction for the skinny person in the relationship: "Shut up."

I read his post and identified immediately with his frustration, but I did think his advice was a little extreme. Shut up? The key to marriage is communication -- even about tough subjects. But before I could get all the way up on my high horse, Simon reminded me that I had laid down the exact same rules just a few months ago when it came to his comments about my weight, diet or exercise. Whoops.

Like many people who struggle with their weight, I've been dieting, losing weight and gaining weight since my early teens. I was 14 when I spotted my first stretch marks -- angry red lines where my arms met my back -- and throughout high school and college my weight would swing up and down depending on what was happening that semester. Before our wedding I managed to get down to 144 pounds, which was still overweight for my frame, but I had a waist and I was glowing, so I was happy that day.

mixed weight
Photo by Mark Kuroda, taken May 2010

Now, at five-foot-one and 175 pounds, I am obese, according to the BMI chart. I'm short and stocky and apple-bodied and endomorphic and always will be. Simon, at 6 feet, struggles to maintain 165 pounds. He has the body of a runway model: jutting hip bones, long, elegant legs and the slenderest ankles and wrists. Absolutely anything can make him accidentally lose 10 pounds: a long cold, the month he started using a standing desk, the time he tried to take up jogging.

Simon bit his lip for a long time when my weight started exploding in 2011. We were both working long hours and getting takeout for dinner a lot. On the weekends, we met up with friends at restaurants and enjoyed big Buca di Beppo dinners with his family. Of course, nothing about our lifestyle was showing on Simon's body, but it was wreaking havoc on mine. I got stretch marks on my stomach and I'd never even been pregnant. The clothes I had bought during a triumphant shopping spree before the wedding no longer fit. The honeymoon was definitely over and so was my strict diet and exercise regimen. Two and a half years post-wedding, I was the largest I'd ever been -- and it was starting to get to Simon.

For a while, our fights went something like this: we'd go out to a nice dinner, enjoy food and wine, and then we would read the dessert menu.

Simon: Do you feel like dessert?

Me: Sure!

Simon: You know, not every meal has to be a special meal.

Me: What the f***?!

I'm probably being unfair here. In fact, I know I'm being unfair. Because for every time Simon has accidentally made me feel like shit about what I eat in public, there is another time I've convinced him that spending money on Weight Watchers or a gym membership or NutriSystem or a personal trainer or an Atkins book or a spinning class package would put an end to my complaints about my weight. For every time Simon has nagged about carb counts, I've seized draconian control over our grocery list and what we put in our mouths. Farmer's market vegetables every week! Every meal must be 40 percent protein! No more supermarket sushi!

Sometimes he teased me about the "enormous sacrifice" he was making because we didn't have any junk food or chocolate in the house because of whatever diet I was on at the time. I'd roll my eyes at his theatrics.

But little did he know that for a while last year, I would go to Target on the days I knew he wouldn't be home until late. I'd buy a pint of Ben & Jerry's Phish Food, finish it before he came home and then throw the trash in the dumpster. It felt like cheating -- especially when I would act astonished, just astonished! -- when another week of dieting would result in a net gain. He was carrying my pain with me when I hit roadblock after roadblock, but I was never completely truthful with him about the steps I was (and wasn't) taking to reach my goal.

Eventually the half-truths and disappointment were too much to bear, and in late 2012 I decided that enough was enough. Now, I didn't have the kind of breakthrough Al Roker had (he described his point of no return as "it clicked for me"). Instead, I decided I was over all the dieting and bingeing drama, that I loved our life together, I loved my job and myself and I was happy. If I lost weight, great. If I stayed heavy, so be it. That led to our worst fight ever over my weight.

"That's not acceptable," he said. "You have to try."

"Why?" I asked. "Why do I have to try?" Because. Because my doctor wants me to lose weight. Because obesity is linked to a lot of diseases. Because my Dad is pre-diabetic. Because being fat makes future conception and pregnancy difficult. Because he loves me and he doesn't want to see me unhappy anymore.

I knew all these things, but I still flew into a sobbing rage and walked out of the apartment -- an alarming escalation of our usually quiet and weepy fights.

"If you can't accept me for who I am, then you'd better get yourself a mistress," I spat at him before I left. I drove to the nearby Pavilions and cried in the parking lot. I called my mom and she prayed with me over the phone, asking God to strengthen my marriage. Looking back, I was a real drama queen!

We ended the fight by "compromising," (ha) which for now means I forbid him to ever mention my weight, dieting or exercise again.

It seems extreme, but just like in Al Roker's relationship, Simon's silence is helping to heal this sore spot in our marriage. I no longer turn to him for understanding on this subject. Why should I? He has no idea what it's like to feel like a failure on the scale or to feel hungry at night because all your calories are used up for the day.

For empathy, I turn to the Reddit.com LoseIt community, which is a forum for people of all sizes who are in the process of shedding pounds (and posting very motivating before-and-after pictures, to boot).

For his part, Simon's learned that even his sweetest, gentlest words about my health are infuriating to me, and that his actions are what counts. I feel really happy when he goes on hikes with me on the weekends, or when he makes a healthy dinner once a week. He knows to no longer comment on what I'm eating in public or when we're with friends, and I've stopped acting like less of a drug addict when it comes to food. That means no more secret eating. I write everything down, even when I have a bad day, and I try to view my healthy eating as the new normal, not a temporary phase that I can just burn through and put behind me once I reach my goal weight.

I'm not sure how long I'll last on my latest health run. I've had, after all, about a dozen. I feel pretty strong right now, but then again it's only one month into the new year. The only thing I know for sure in my race to lose weight is that I need to start seeing Simon for who he really is: someone on the sidelines, holding a big handmade sign above his head and screaming my name at the top of his lungs.

UPDATE: I joined a group discussion about the issue on HuffPost Live. Check it out!

Below, tips from people who know how to lose weight.

 • Ken Carlyle: "In the fall of 2008, I saw photos of myself taken at a football tailgate. I had known I was overweight, but these pictures finally bothered me enough to change. My New Year's resolution in 2009 was to lose weight." His advice for making it stick: "Stick with it. Anyone can keep a New Year's Resolution. It's a promise to yourself, and you just have to decide that you are worthy of keeping that promise because you don't want to let yourself down."

 • Giuseppe Mangiafico: "On January 1, 2011, I decided to make a 'New You Resolution' instead of a New Year's resolution. I decided to stop with the excuses and make a life change." His advice for making it stick: "Know what you put in your body. Read the ingredients in whatever you're eating. If you can't recognize the ingredients, it's probably not good for you. Time in the gym isn't where you're going to be the most successful. It's what you do in your free time that is the key to your success."

 • Justin Smith: "In January of 2010 at nearly 300 pounds, I made yet another resolution to lose weight and get fit. I'd tried enough fad diets and pills to know that they're not successful in the long-term. I had to make a decision to make a lifestyle change." His advice for making it stick: "I chose to think of it as an ongoing process instead of a quick fix. I recognized that I wasn't going to be fit or athletic on January 1. I wouldn't be running a marathon on January 2. But I made a goal to try to take the steps necessary to make a healthy lifestyle possible. It was not a total change on that first day. Instead, it was small changes that would lead me to my overall goal. Keep at it. It's not easy, and some days you'll feel like throwing in the towel, but remember why you started and what you're gaining by making positive changes in your life. It is worth it."

 • Anthony Masiello: "I started at the beginning of 2006, like many others, with a New Year's resolution. I vowed to give up soda and sweets and set a goal to lose 50 pounds by the end of the year. After almost three months of sticking to the plan and not having a sip of soda or a taste of sweets, I still had not lost a single pound. I was frustrated and becoming depressed, but I was determined to find something that would work." His advice for making it stick: "In order to be successful, a resolution should be realistic, measurable and permanent. Set yourself up for success. Be realistic about what you want to achieve and make a resolution that you will be able to stick with long-term. A year's worth of small, committed steps forward will add up to be much more beneficial than one week of temporary success with an overly ambitious goal that you can't maintain."

 • Stacy Langston: "When New Year's came along, I set a resolution to finally become healthy." Her advice for making it stick: "Just keep moving forward. If you fall off the wagon, don't beat yourself up, just keep going. Also, keep a shirt or pants that you no longer can wear that is too large. It will remind you of all your hard work to get out of that outfit, and that you don't want to go back to wearing it!"

 • Tom Dioguardi: "I have made the same New Year's resolution over and over and failed over and over because I thought I could do it alone. I've now realized that I can't do it without guidance." His advice for making it stick: "Preparation. Being prepared every day with your meals. When talking to people about how I did it, the phrase 'watching what you eat' always comes up. And I tell people, "I didn't watch what I ate, I decided what I ate.' If you lock it into your head that this is the one thing I want to achieve and not let anything stop you, then you will be successful. I tell people it's 90 percent above the neck."

 • Rebekah Courtney: "My New Year's resolution would be to lose weight every year, and I would quit by February." Her advice for making it stick: "Have one cheat day a week, where you eat whatever you want. If you are always depriving yourself, you will never stick to it. And if you slip up one day, do not quit. Wake up and start again the next."

 • Derek Lavigne: "For the longest time I kept telling myself that I was young, and that I had time to take this weight off. There came a day when I said to myself enough is enough, it is time to make a serious life change. This was about three days prior to the new year, so I decided to make my resolution for the year to lose 20 pounds." His advice for making it stick: "Don't keep putting things off until next week/month/year. I would often say to myself that I would lose weight eventually and that I shouldn't be too concerned. But I didn't want to find myself 10 years older, wishing I would have done something when I was younger, when it was easier to make a change."

 • Jenny Reyes-Marsillo: "I ? vowed that my New Year's resolution was to take the weight off. Later on in the week, getting ready for Christmas dinner, I put on a skirt that had fit just one month ago when I bought it, and now it was too tight and I looked awful. I looked in the mirror and didn't even recognize myself. That night I told myself I wouldn't wait until New Year's Eve, I would start today." Her advice for making it stick: "The reason why my diet worked was probably mostly because it wasn't a New Year's resolution! I didn't want to commit to this one day to change my life, I realized I wanted to commit to a healthier lifestyle. Because it was a pre-New Year's Resolution was one of the factors as to why I was able to do it."

As Android rises, Asia's trend-setters show signs of iPhone fatigue

1 hr.

SINGAPORE?? Apple's iconic iPhone is losing some of its luster among Asia's well-heeled consumers in Singapore and Hong Kong, a victim of changing mobile habits and its own runaway success.

Driven by a combination of iPhone fatigue, a desire to be different and a plethora of competing devices, users are turning to other brands, notably those from Samsung Electronics, eating into Apple's market share.

In Singapore, Apple's products were so dominant in 2010 that more devices here ran its iOS operating system per capita than anywhere else in the world.

But StatCounter, which measures traffic collected across a network of 3 million websites, calculates that Apple's share of mobile devices in Singapore ? iPad and iPhone ? declined sharply last year. From a peak of 72 percent in January 2012, its share fell to 50 percent this month, while Android devices now account for 43 percent of the market, up from 20 percent in the same month last year.

In Hong Kong, devices running Apple's iOS now account for about 30 percent of the total, down from about 45 percent a year ago. Android accounts for nearly two-thirds.

"Apple is still viewed as a prestigious brand, but there are just so many other cool smartphones out there now that the competition is just much stiffer," said Tom Clayton, chief executive of Singapore-based Bubble Motion, which develops a popular regional social media app called Bubbly.

Leading indicators
Where Hong Kong and Singapore lead, other key markets across fast-growing Asia usually follow.

"Singapore and Hong Kong tend to be, from an electronics perspective, leading indicators on what is going to be hot in Western Europe and North America, as well as what is going to take off in the region," said Jim Wagstaff, who runs a Singapore-based company called Jam Factory?that's developing mobile apps for enterprises.

Southeast Asia is adopting smartphones fast ? consumers spent 78 percent more on smartphones in the 12 months up to September 2012 than they did the year before, according to research company GfK.

Android rising
Anecdotal evidence of iPhone fatigue isn't hard to find: Where a year ago iPhones swamped other devices on the subways of Hong Kong and Singapore, they are now outnumbered by Samsung and HTC smartphones.

While this is partly explained by the proliferation of Android devices, from the cheap to the fancy, there are other signs that Apple has lost followers.

Singapore entrepreneur Aileen Sim recently launched an app for splitting bills called BillPin, settling on an iOS version because that was the dominant platform in the three countries she was targeting ? Singapore, India and the United States.

"But what surprised us was how strong the call for Android was when we launched our app," she said.

Indeed, 70 percent of their target users ? 20-something college students and fresh graduates ? said they were either already on Android or planned to switch over.

"Android is becoming really hard to ignore, around the region and in the U.S. for sure, but surprisingly even in Singapore," she said. "Even my younger early-20s cousins are mostly on Android now."

BillPin launched an Android version this month.

Standing out from the crowd
Napoleon Biggs, chief strategy officer at Gravitas Group, a Hong Kong-based mobile marketing company, said that while Apple and the iPhone remained premium brands there, Samsung's promotional efforts were playing to an increasingly receptive audience.

For some, it is a matter of wanting to stand out from the iPhone-carrying crowd. Others find the higher-powered, bigger-screened Android devices better suited to their changing habits ? watching video, writing Chinese characters ? while the cost of switching devices is lower than they expected, given that most popular social and gaming apps are available for both platforms.

"Hong Kong is a very fickle place," Biggs said.

Janet Chan, a 25-year-old Hong Kong advertising executive, has an iPhone 5, ?but its fast-draining battery and the appeal of a bigger screen for watching movies is prodding her to switch to a Samsung Galaxy Note II.

"After Steve Jobs died, it seems the element of surprise in product launches isn't that great anymore," she said.

Shifting trends
To be sure, there are still plenty of people buying Apple devices. Stores selling their products in places such as Indonesia were full over the Christmas holidays, and the company's new official store in Hong Kong's Causeway Bay has queues snaking out of the door most days.

But the iPhone's drop in popularity in trendy Hong Kong and Singapore is mirrored in the upmarket malls of the region.

"IPhones are like Louis Vuitton handbags," said marketing manager Narisara Konglua in Bangkok, who uses a Galaxy SIII. "It's become so commonplace to see people with iPads and iPhones so you lose your cool edge having one."

In the Indonesian capital Jakarta, an assistant manager at Coca Cola's local venture, Gatot Hadipratomo, agrees. The iPhone "used to be a cool gadget, but now more and more people use it," Hadipratomo said.

There is another influence at play: hip Korea. Korean pop music, movies and TV are hugely popular around the region, and Samsung is riding that wave. And while the impact is more visible in Hong Kong and Singapore, it also translates directly to places like Thailand.

"Thais are not very brand-loyal," says Akkaradert Bumrungmuang, 24, a student at Mahidol University in Bangkok. "That's why whatever is hot or the in-thing to have is adopted quickly here. We follow Korea, so whatever is fashionable in Korea will be a big hit."

This report was written by Jeremy Wagstaff in Singapore, with additional reporting by Lee Chyen Yee in Hong Kong, Khettiya Jittapong and Amy Sawitta Lefevre in Bangkok, and Andjarsari Paramaditha in Jakarta.

You Amplified - Empower Network

TIP! It is almost impossible to have a happy, healthy mind when your body has been neglected entirely. Partake in regular exercise and stick to a nutritious diet.

It is possible to be rudely awakened by the threat of losing loved ones. In order to improve your personal life, you now have to improve your personal development. Where, though, do you begin? There are some fantastic suggestions in this article to help you begin.

TIP! Individuals who are dealing with severe problems may benefit from regular therapy. Books that teach self help are helpful, but do not contain the one-on-one personal touch you can get from a therapist.

Are you having trouble meeting someone that you can love and call your own? Use the net to jump start your search. Amazingly, meeting online is now how 40% of couples begin their relationship. Your special someone could be looking for you right now. Both have their benefits and their downfalls.

TIP! To develop as a human being, it is important to know what your ambitions and goals are. Changing your perspective about the future is all about your view on it.

The goals that you have set in your personal development plan should be clearly defined to show the steps toward achievement of success. With specific goals, chances are you?ll do the things that need to be done to accomplish them. Doing so will allow you to realize success more quickly and meet all challenges.

TIP! Pinpoint exactly what is blocking your progress. This can prove problematic for most folks.

Head to a movie with your best friend if anxiety is a problem in your life. Movies are social settings, but they do not require conversation or uncomfortable socialization. It will also help you learn to feel comfortable and secure around large groups of people.

TIP! Get rid of unneeded stress in your life. To avoid stress, try to remain calm when something unexpected happens.

Find out more abut sexual capitol and how you can develop it. This has nothing to do with using sex appeal to get the things you covet. It has more to do with charm. Good social skills, including a command of sexual capital, are not absolutely required, but they can take you further than you would get without them.

TIP! Personal development begins with becoming a leader. Most people believe that leadership and influence are synonymous.

Self-discipline is a key element of any personal development program. Make sure that you develop self control skills. Try and curb your desires to overindulge on harmful items. When you take control of these desires you life will be a richer and healthier one.

TIP! Perhaps stress is keeping you from feeling happy. Being subjected to sustained and extreme stress can have negative mental and physical repercussions.

It?s a good personal guideline to treat everyone with respect even if they don?t necessarily have anything you might need from them. The treatment you show them is not a reflection of their character but of yours.

TIP! Live your life with wisdom and humility. Learn from situations you encounter every day, and make sure that you recognize what you cannot change about circumstances in your life.

Failure can be devastating to one?s ego when one is trying to better oneself through self improvement. Actually, failure is really a learning experience. It shows you what your strengths and your weaknesses are. Every thing you fail at, you should be proud of, it is just another part of you!

TIP! It is senseless to allow yourself to be consumed with worries. When you worry, you create a made-up situation inside of your mind that hasn?t yet happened, and in all likelihood, probably never will.

You can learn how to handle difficult problems without over-reacting. If you learn how to keep a good head when you are in a stressful situation, you can get the confidence in order to succeed in anything you do! Whenever a stressful situation strikes, breathe deeply and feel your body relax.

TIP! Personal development begins when you identify what you value the most. Value your personal best and make that important to your life.

Stay humble. Humans are just a very small bit of the universe. No one knows everything, and everyone has more to learn from others. Understand this and open yourself up to new opportunities. When you approach situations with an open mind, you will see how much you can learn from others.

TIP! Choose one of your most important aspects that you want to improve, and put your focus there. There may be several aspects of your life that you want to improve, but if you limit your attention to one thing at a time, your chance for success improves.

If you like to talk a lot, you might have heard that you need to zip those lips and listen more. This is particularly true if you want to improve yourself. Ensure you are taking time to listen to yourself. Hearing your own thoughts and feelings when you express them will lead to a better understanding of what you need to improve your life.

TIP! Exercising should be part of everyone?s life, not just those who are looking to lose weight. There are a variety of great reasons to exercise.

Good health is the cornerstone of personal development. In order to maintain a healthy body, you have to stay motivated to practice healthy eating habits and exercise. If you make your health the priority, you will likely feel your best, which makes contributing to the different aspects of life easier.

TIP! Instead of bragging abut your achievements and awards, ask other people about what they have accomplished that they are most proud of. You will then find out things that others have done to accomplish their goals, and you will get some insight.

Look for different sources of encouragement, like books. Some people see it spiritually, whereas others just find it inspirationally. Keeping something on hand that you can revisit when necessary is a great way to improve your mindset, and navigate such situations more effectively.

TIP! Many employers are not as concerned with the name of your school as they are with the fact that you had the discipline and determination to finish the work and graduate! This shows that you will be a dedicated, hard worker. Finance jobs are one of the few exceptions, as your school will matter a great deal.

As this article indicates, a self improvement plan requires a lot of time, effort and dedication. Plan everything carefully, and do your research before you start working toward a new goal. The tips you have read will guide you in the right direction for the beginning of your personal development journey.

Content Marketing Presents Uncertain Future For ... - PR 20/20

As publishers see continued erosion of ad revenue and readership, advertisers are shifting their dollars to digital, hiring writers,?outsourcing content production?to marketing agencies, and building their own audiences. In short, brands are becoming publishers, and investing resources in content marketing that were once earmarked for traditional media.?

Consider the case of?HubSpot, a B2B inbound marketing software company that is redefining what's possible when content is ingrained into every phase of a brand's sales funnel. The company has amassed a powerful reach, including?449,000+ Facebook Likes and 266,000+ Twitter Followers,?in large part bypassing old media channels and paid advertising.?

According to a recent?Forbes article, HubSpot, generates more than 60,000 leads per month, from more than 1,000,000 website visitors.

So, Brands are Publishers, But . . .

It's easy to see the potential for businesses in content marketing, but the reality is that becoming a successful brand publisher is hard. Consider these challenges facing corporate marketers:

 • There is a growing?talent gap.
 • Many brands (or their existing marketing departments, to be more specific), lack the ability to?tell engaging stories.
 • Marketing teams are not structured to scale content.
 • It?s difficult to break through the noise, as the web is?flooded with low-quality content.
 • Building reach (and influence) is hard.

While brands confront new demands on talent, technology and business process in order to adapt, publishers have a bit of a head start in these critical areas, and can compete directly with marketing agencies for outsourced content dollars. They can leverage their built in audiences, writer networks, and ability to scale content production to create new revenue streams, and even develop highly evolved business models.?

Rather than viewing content marketing as their impending doom, publishers should be focused on the emerging opportunities:

 • Create and distribute content, in and out of network.
 • Produce sponsored content (aka?native advertising).
 • Tap existing advertising partnerships, and even consider cannibalizing their advertising business in favor of a more sustainable future.
 • Offer?integrated services?(i.e. content + SEO + social + PR + email + analytics). Content alone isn?t enough.

As Andrew Davis (@TPLdrew), author of?Brandscaping, said in a recent?Marketing Agency Insider post, ?Publishers are?masterful content creators, and they are able to charge a premium for the services they offer by leveraging their market research, existing distribution platforms, and even the talent from their editorial teams.?

And Paul Rossi (@economistrossi), managing editor of The Economist,?states on Digiday, "The opportunity for media companies is to create content that?s compelling for users on behalf of advertisers. That doesn?t mean it has to be native, but the skills in telling stories are quite valuable to marketers as they build audience themselves. "

So, Publishers Can Be Agencies, But . . .

Despite the challenges presented to old media, specifically newspapers and magazines, opportunities are arising for publishers to evolve, and to become key players in the?modern marketing agency ecosystem.?

marketing-agency-ecosystem

It seems like an obvious play, but not so fast. There are obstacles ahead for the publishers that choose to venture into the agency world. Specifically:

 • Competition for talent will be intense.
 • Integration of services isn?t easy, but it's necessary.
 • Change velocity requires nimble business models, which is not necessarily synonymous with publishers.
 • Maintaining editorial integrity and content quality, as the lines continue to blur.
 • Brands are building their own reach, and if they succeed at a mass scale, publishing as we know it today will become extinct.

What Next?

We're left with more questions than answers, but for publishers willing to take chances, and?venture into the unknown, they just may discover untapped markets and revenue as an integral part of the modern marketing ecosystem.?

Bathroom Decorating and Creative Renovation | Future Home Realty

Bathroom Decorating and Creative RenovationPlanning to decorate your bathroom? Need some ideas to give your bathroom some personal touch? Then look no further. Here are some ideas to jazz up the looks of your bathroom. The colors that you use for your bathroom can help create the right atmosphere for your bathroom. You could use light colors such as green, blue, cream yellow or other pastel colors. Light colors help soothe your mind and create the perfect milieu in your bathroom.

If your bathroom tiles have become faded or lost their sheen, then you would need to get them polished or give them a matte look. Otherwise, if they are falling apart, then you need to put new tiles for your bathroom. Keep some little decorations on your bathroom shelf. These could be the trinkets you got from a holiday visit, for instance.

Shower curtains give your bathroom a fresh look. The use of colors animates your shower curtains and the entire look and feel of your bathroom changes completely. You could use one of those curtains with various themes.

Even your glass shower door can improve the looks of your bathroom instantly. You could use colorful glass shower doors or stained glass shower doors with various themes on stained glass. However, you could choose to use plain glass shower doors, as they can make your bathroom appear larger than usual.

Also get drawers made for the things that you use regularly such as your toothbrush, soap and other bath accessories. Add separate holders for your towels, shower caps and other accessories. Try to make the best use of your bathroom space by including the necessary items within the bathroom. Make sure that your bathroom is a place you look forward to return to the next morning or after a long day.

Replacing a worn out or outdated bathroom vanity is a quick and dramatic way to clean up a bathroom. With a little planning and a step-by-step approach, you can complete this alteration in a day. In fact, the biggest challenge may be just deciding which vanity to buy.

It?s very important to make sure the bathroom vanity is flush against the wall. You?ll need to use shims and a carpenter?s level for this step. Once the vanity is positioned, attach it to the wall with 2-1/2? wallboard screws.

Before you attach the new bathroom vanity top, install the new faucet. It will make the job go faster in the long run, and it?s one less time that you?ll have to get under the sink. Use tub-and-tile caulk to secure the bathroom vanity top to the base.

Reconnect the plumbing this is also a good opportunity to replace the p-trap. Teflon tape makes the connections easier and tighter. Carefully apply a thin line of caulk around the countertop edges. Be careful with this job, the caulk will be highly visible, so tidiness really counts.

Progressive optics for side mirrors ends automobile blind spots without distorting view, experts say

Jan. 28, 2013 ? A new optical prescription for automobile side-view mirrors may eliminate the dreaded "blind spot" in traffic without distorting the perceived distance of cars approaching from behind. As described in a new paper? in the Optical Society's (OSA) journal Optics Letters, objects viewed in a mirror using the new design appear larger than in traditional side-view mirrors, so it's easier to judge their following distance and speed.

Today's motor vehicles in the United States use two different types of mirrors for the driver and passenger sides. The driver's side mirror is flat so that objects viewed in it are undistorted and not optically reduced in size, allowing the operator to accurately judge an approaching-from-behind vehicle's separation distance and speed. Unfortunately, the optics of a flat mirror also create a blind spot, an area of limited vision around a vehicle that often leads to collisions during merges, lane changes, or turns. The passenger side mirror, on the other hand, possesses a spherical convex shape. While the small radius of curvature widens the field of view, it also causes any object seen in it to look smaller in size and farther away than it actually is. Because of this issue, passenger side mirrors on cars and trucks in the United States must be engraved with the safety warning, "Objects in mirror are closer than they appear." In the European Union, both driver and passenger side mirrors are aspheric (One that bulges more to one side than the other, creating two zones on the same mirror). The inner zone -- the section nearest the door -- has a nearly perfect spherical shape, while the outer zone -- the section farthest from the door -- becomes less and less curved toward the edges. The outer zone of this aspheric design also produces a similar distance and size distortion seen in spherical convex designs.

In an attempt to remedy this problem, some automotive manufacturers have installed a separate, small wide-angle mirror in the upper corner of side mirrors. This is a slightly domed square that provides a wide-angle view similar to a camera's fisheye lens. However, drivers often find this system to be a distracting as well as expensive addition.

A simpler design for a mirror that would be free of blind spots, have a wide field of view, and produce images that are accurately scaled to the true size of an approaching object -- and work for both sides of a vehicle -- has been proposed by researchers Hocheol Lee and Dohyun Kim at Hanbat National University in Korea and Sung Yi at Portland State University in Oregon. Their solution was to turn to a progressive additive optics technology commonly used in "no-line multifocal" eyeglasses that simultaneously corrects myopia (nearsightedness) and presbyopia (reduced focusing ability).

"Like multifocal glasses that give the wearer a range of focusing abilities from near to far and everything in between, our progressive mirror consists of three resolution zones: one for distance vision, one for close-up viewing and a middle zone making the transition between the two," says Lee. "However, unlike glasses where the range of focus is vertically stacked [from distance viewing on top to close-up viewing on bottom], our mirror surface is horizontally progressive."

Lee says that a driver's side mirror manufactured with his team's new design would feature a curvature where the inner zone is for distance viewing and the outer zone is for near-field viewing to compensate for what otherwise would be blind spots. "The image of a vehicle approaching from behind would only be reduced in the progressive zone in the center," Lee says, "while the image sizes in the inner and outer zones are not changed."

The horizontal progressive mirror, Lee says, does have some problems with binocular disparity (the slight difference between the viewpoints of a person's two eyes) and astigmatism (blurring of a viewed image due to the difference between the focusing power in the horizontal and vertical directions). These minor errors are a positive trade off, the researchers feel, to gain a mirror with a greatly expanded field of view, more reliable depth perception, and no blind spot.

To prove the merits of their design, the researchers used a conventional glass molding process to manufacture a prototype horizontal progressive mirror. They were able to produce a mirror with more than double the field of view of a traditional flat mirror.

Other wide-angle designs have also been proposed, but the new design described January 28 in the Optics Letters paper offers a particularly easy-to-manufacture approach to the problem of blind spots by seamlessly integrating just three zones.

The researchers claim that the manufacturing cost of their proposed mirror design would be cheaper than the mirror design with the added small wide-angle viewing section. Since mirror designs are stipulated by national automobile regulations, the new design would need to be approved for use in the United States before appearing on cars here.

Elephants find sanctuary in Kenya amid rampant poaching

Workers at a Kenyan sanctuary for elephants who have lost their mothers, many through rampant poaching, talk about how they care for one of Africa's most endangered species. By NBC's William Angelucci.

By Ron Allen, Correspondent, NBC News

Kenyan police announced on Jan. 15 they had seized the biggest haul ever of smuggled elephant ivory. Two tons of ivory valued at around $1.5 million was stuffed in a container at the port of Mombasa.

"This is a big catch, the biggest ever single seizure of ivory at the port of Mombasa," Kiberenge Seroney, the port's police officer in charge of criminal investigations, told Reuters.

"We fail to understand where one gathers the courage to park such enormous quantities of ivory, hoping that they can slip through our security systems."

Earlier in the month, poachers killed a family of 11 elephants in the single biggest slaughter of the animals on record in the east African country.

The harrowing news prompted NBC News cameraman William Angelucci to pull out a video he had filmed at a unique elephant orphanage in the country.

The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust has been trying to save African elephants since the 1970s. It takes in young elephants that have been orphaned by the slaughter of their mothers and fathers for their tusks. The staff essentially become surrogate parents, feeding the youngsters by hand. As they grow older, for some elephants, humans are the only "parents" they've known.

So far, more than 80 elephants have been reintroduced to the wild after reaching an age between eight to 10 years old. That, however, doesn't end the relationship. The trust?s handlers say many of the animals "keep in touch," and even have brought their own young to visit their human families.
