Discover Magnificent Mantas While Scuba Diving In The Maldives

Warm crystal clear waters and colourful coral reefs are enough to tempt any traveller to go scuba diving in the Maldives but the opportunity to swim alongside magnificent manta rays should not be missed.

The Indian Ocean waters are home to hundreds of manta rays and between the months of May and November, depending on the tides, the beautiful creatures head to Hanifaru Bay, a lagoon near an uninhabited island in the Maldives, for a feeding frenzy.

The manta rays are drawn to the bay when the lunar tide pushes against the monsoon current creating a suction effect which swirls plankton and krill to the ocean surface.

British marine biologist, Guy Stevens, has been researching manta rays in the Maldives for a number of years. He explained: "Just after high tide you'll see a few manta rays turn up. Then poof, a whole group will move in, and you'll get as many as 200 feeding for two to four hours in a bay no bigger than a soccer field."

The spot is a popular location for diving with manta rays but Stevens is concerned that the waters could become overcrowded, causing lasting damage to the bay and its marine life.

"Word is out that Hanifaru is a top manta spot," he explained, "and although the government has declared the bay a 'protected area, we still don't have any regulations in force to limit the number of divers and snorkellers who can swim at any one time."

During feeding time, the mantas often stay close to the surface enabling people snorkelling or scuba diving in the Maldives to get close to the creatures. The mantas are often joined by other rays and giant whale sharks who have come to feed on the plankton.
However, despite providing the perfect diving sites for travellers and scuba divers, Stevens is concerned that without regulations, the crowded waters could drive mantas out of the area and is has proposed turning the bay into a marine sanctuary.

Progress has been slow but Maldives Environment Minister Mohamed Aslam said: "I'm not ruling out declaring Hanifaru a marine-life sanctuary. But we need to increase our ability to enforce existing environmental laws before creating new protected areas."

White mentioned Hunt needs to win against Stefan Struve, his current match-up at UFC 146, plus get past one of the heavyweight division's best to be considered for a title shot. Hunt is currently riding a three-fight win streak, but had lost six fights before that.

After Overeem's chances of getting a license for the May 26 event were called into question by the Nevada Athletic Commission, Hunt's fans took to Twitter and Facebook to lobby White for a spot for the slugger. However, their arguments that Hunt would provide an exciting fight against dos Santos did not sway White.

Now, the UFC has to wait for Overeem to have a hearing with the NAC. White said Overeem deserves to go through due process.

"Everybody gets due process," White said. "Alistair Overeem will have his due process with the Nevada State Athletic Commission. We'll see what happens and we'll go from there. When it all goes down, somebody else will speak about this. Not me."

And much to his fans' dismay, it won't be Hunt fighting dos Santos.

I received the following email from one of our subscribers:

"Marc, Quick question please: Have you noticed an excess number of shoulder injuries and shoulder surgeries? I was in OKC to watch the WCWS (4th year attending) and talked with another coach from Mississippi that told me he sees the same thing. An awful lot of players with shoulder injuries. If so, what do you attribute to this? 50+ weeks a year work and overuse?? Improper stretching along with improper throwing mechanics? One thing is for sure, this needs to be addressed at a national level and coaches need to be educated to ensure our young female athletes are not damaging their shoulders and requiring surgery as an expected part of playing softball! I did like the note ref Jaeger's Long Toss, Arm Circles and J Bands warm-ups before throwing. I'll have to get quite a few coaches to tell me they are already using this type warm-up before throwing, as I'm sure my coaches will be reluctant to change unless its well known in the community.

Jim" Here is my answer: Yes, there is an increase in the number of shoulder injuries in our sport.

It is due to many factors:

1) Uni-dimensional athlete

The modern day softball player isn't an athlete anymore; she is just a good softball player. By that I mean that nowadays, kids specializes in one sport (softball) too early and don't participate in other sports. This results in poor overall athletic development, muscular imbalances and overuse of certain muscles (throwing) because of repetitive use.

2) Improper throwing mechanics

We don't spend enough time reinforcing proper throwing mechanics and many kids end up overcompensating with other muscles which create problems over time.

3) Improper conditioning

Lack of stability, flexibility, and strength in certain muscles will cause problems and lead to overuse injuries. The shoulder is an especially complex and fragile joint.

4) Improper warm-up

A simple small tear one time because of a poor or rushed warm-up is enough to lead to a major should overuse injury that will last months and even longer. The warm-up is absolutely crucial.

5) Overuse

If you do too much softball without ever giving your body a break, eventually it will break down.

So, what do you need to do to prevent shoulder injuries?

1) Ensure proper overall athletic development
2) Give your break a rest
3) Always warm-up thoroughly, especially the shoulder
4) Fix and optimize throwing mechanics
5) Use shoulder injury prevention exercises
6) Pay attention to any sign or symptoms of shoulder
injuries and seek medical attention early
7) Never ever play through shoulder pain
