So, here?s the deal?

Sharon?s dog says I?m officially an idiot, and this time he?s right!

I?ve got 4500+ valuable entrepreneurial BUYERS, and until recently I never sent them a direct mail piece.

My only solace is I know I?m not alone?

Every day I talk to internet marketers who?ve got hundreds, thousands, or even tens of thousands of happy buyers that they?ve never mailed to.

And it?s fricking WEIRD, know why?

Because we?re warriors at heart?

We tackle the most difficult technical hurdles day in and day out?

I mean, did you ever stop to think about how many frickin? technical things you?ve got to know, and how many companies we have to coordinate just to make a single sale?

For example, I?m about to launch a new membership site (?Make Them Buy? ? bi-weekly live group webinars? watch for it please)?

And in order to do so, I have to coordinate ALL the following companies and software:

• WishList Member to run the membership site
• ClickBank to process the recurring billing and run the affiliate program
• Amazon S3 to serve the large files and video recordings
• LinkLok to secure the S3 locations from theives
• WordPress, so that I could run WishList Member
• Aweber, to integrate with the membership email list
• GoToWebinar to run the webinars themselves
• And of course, my domain registrar and web host
• Plus I have to know about 8 software packages and programming languages to put it all together (and ?supervise others)?

Now here?s the thing?

I?m doing ALL this to get maybe a 1% conversion from internet prospects. ?(Which, by the way, ?in order to attract will require that I advertise using several more companies and technical systems)?

But for some reason people like you and I run like the plague from simply writing a letter, licking some stamps, and taking it to the post office to get?response rates up 5 to 10 times better! ?(Buyer mailings are like that? ask anyone who?s done it)

I dunno, maybe it?s because the lady behind the counter was mean to us when we were little. ?(I distinctly remember a heavy set woman with a mustache?)

Or maybe it?s just because the word ?office? is in post office, and we?re all totally allergic to anything associated with a traditional work environment.

But whatever the reason?

It?s FRICKIN? DUMB!

Hiring of CEO revives Augusta membership debate

As a club that prides itself on tradition, Augusta National again is in the middle of a membership debate it thought it was done with nearly a decade ago.

Just seven days before the Masters, no less.

The last four chief executives of IBM ? a longtime corporate sponsor of the Masters ? have been members of the exclusive golf club in Augusta, Ga. The latest CEO of the computer giant happens to be a woman. Virginia Rometty was appointed this year.

One problem ? a woman has never worn a member's green jacket since Augusta National opened in 1933.

"I think they're both in a bind," Martha Burk said Thursday evening.

Burk, who spearheaded an unsuccessful campaign 10 years ago for the club to admit a female member, said Friday morning on CNN she fears Augusta and IBM will work out a "sham solution" to make the issue go away.

"The company has a huge responsibility here not to undermine its first female CEO," Burk said. "If they accept anything less than full member ? or resign their sponsorship, which is another option ? they're going to undermine their new CEO. And they'll be making a statement that they don't consider her an equal to her predecessors."

Still to be determined is how much traction the topic will muster going into the Masters.

Augusta National, through a spokesman, declined comment in keeping to its policy that membership issues are private. IBM did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment.

Rometty is said to play golf sparingly. Her greater passion is scuba diving.

Hootie Johnson, chairman of the club a decade ago, ignited the controversy back then when he said that while Augusta might one day have a female member, it would be on the club's timetable and "not at the point of a bayonet."

Burk applied pressure on just about everyone connected with the club and with the Masters, the major championship that garners the highest TV ratings. She demanded that four companies drop their television sponsorship because of discrimination. She lobbied PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem not to recognize the Masters as part of the tour schedule.

It didn't work. The protest fizzled in a parking lot down the street from the club during the third round of the 2003 tournament.

"We did raise the issue," Burk said on CNN. "If we had not done that, this would not be on the table now."

Not only is the debate back, this time it has a face ? Rometty, a 31-year veteran of IBM who has been ranked among the "50 Most Powerful Women in Business" by Fortune magazine the last seven years. Rometty was No. 7 last year.

The chairman of Augusta National ? and the Masters ? is Billy Payne, who ran the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. When he replaced Johnson as chairman of the club and of the Masters tournament in 2006, he said there was "no specific timetable" for admitting women.

The question was raised at the 2007 and 2010 Masters. Both times, Payne said membership issues were private.

Rometty succeeds Sam Palmissano at IBM, which runs the Masters' website from the bottom floor of the media center. According to a list published by USA Today in 2002, the three CEOs prior to Palmissano also were members ? Louis Gertsner, John Akers and John Opel.

As the corporate sponsors became the target, Johnson wound up doing away with TV sponsorship for two years at the Masters to keep the corporate partners ? IBM, Coca-Cola and Citigroup ? out of the fray.

Only IBM returned as a TV sponsor for the 2005 Masters. The others were SBC Communications and ExxonMobil.

Burk said it should not be that easy for IBM to hide if the debate gains momentum.

"What IBM needs to do is draw a line in the sand ? 'We're either going to pull our sponsorship and membership and any ancillary activities we support with the tournament, or the club is going to have to honor our CEO the way they have in the past,'" Burk said in a telephone interview Thursday evening. "There's no papering over it. They just need to step up and do the right thing.

"They need to not pull that argument that they support the tournament and not the club," she said. "That does not fool anybody, and they could undermine their new CEO."

Burk said she would not be surprised if IBM pressured Rometty to say she doesn't want to be a member.

"Really, I don't think it's her responsibility," Burk said. "It's the board of directors. They need to take action here. They don't need to put that on her. They need to say, 'This is wrong. We thought the club was on the verge of making changes several years ago, and we regretfully end our sponsorship to maintain her credibility and the company brand.'"

The debate returns just in time for one of the most anticipated Masters in years. Tiger Woods finally returned to winning form last week at Bay Hill and is considered one of the favorites, along with U.S. Open champion Rory McIlroy. Eight of the top 20 players in the world ranking have won heading into the first major of the year, a list that includes world No. 1 Luke Donald and Phil Mickelson.

Now comes a sensitive issue that dogged the tournament a decade ago, and might not go away easily. Women can play the course at Augusta National, but cannot join the club or wear the Augusta green jacket, which is reserved for members and stands as a status symbol in business and golf.

Rometty could become a central figure in the argument over female membership whether she wishes to or not.

"We have a face, we have a resume, we have a title and we have a credible reason to do it that doesn't involve Martha Burk," Burk said.

Burk said she is no longer chair of the National Council of Women's Organizations. She had planned to step down until the first flap with the Masters began in the summer of 2002. Now, she said she runs the Corporate Accountability Project for the council, a project born from her battle with Augusta.

Water & Business in Canada Part VI: Food and Water Security, A ...

World Water Day and Canada Water Week were widely celebrated this year. In Toronto a diverse panel of experts gathered for a candid discussion about water issues related to agriculture, as well as food and beverage manufacturing. Canada, having been blessed with bountiful water resources, is increasingly seen as a strategic location to feed a growing planet. This is a large nation, where land, potash and freshwaters meet to create the perfect conditions to grow food: but not all is well.

"The World is Thirsty Because We Are Hungry" is the tagline from this year's international World Water Day. To discuss how that relates to Canadian issues, a panel organized by the Canadian Water Resources Association (CWRA) gathered in Toronto. Representatives from Steam Whistle Brewing, Nestl? Waters Canada, WWF-Canada, The Bloom Centre for Sustainability and the National Round Table on the Environment and the Economy shared their insights on the subject. For an evening, water use in food production took a front seat; the dialogue raised concerns related to pricing, infrastructure, education, technology and policy.

THE ISSUES

What are the issues the Canadian food and beverage industry should pay attention to?

The biggest "looming disaster" is the current condition of municipal infrastructure. While companies such as Steam Whistle and Nestl? use spring waters as product ingredient, municipal infrastructure is relied upon for water and wastewater delivery and disposal in the product manufacturing processes. As water costs increase to fix municipal infrastructure, small to medium sized businesses suffer financial losses. Since most food and beverage manufacturers are small enterprises, the effects of price increases are felt all the more.

Interestingly, to save money companies need to invest in water efficiencies. However, as Kevin Jones of Bloom Centre for Sustainability noted, while the technology is here today, many businesses are not aware of readily available solutions. Education is a must; not only for new technologies but also the importance in understanding how much water is being used and discharged. Measuring water use in operations is surprisingly a relatively new concept in the industry.

The panel also explored the positive and negative implications of water markets, currently in existence in Southern Alberta, as well as the need for a national policy and vision around freshwater use.

MAKING THE CONNECTION

How do policy, pricing and education all connect to water security in food and beverage production?

Although not immediately apparent, the inability of most municipalities to gain control and implement upgrading to municipal infrastructure stems from inadequate water pricing which is directly linked to political priorities. To clarify, low water prices are prevalent in residential use, not among the food and beverage industry.

The simple truth is that Canadians need to reduce their water use and pay more for the resource. Without funds to ensure a well functioning infrastructure that moves water and wastewater to people and businesses, growth cannot be adequately maintained, and discharge to clean water bodies will continue.

The more food we need to grow for Canadians and the global markets, the greater our reliance on freshwater resources. The cleaner and healthier rivers, streams, lakes and aquifers the more sustainable they are. Long-term sustainability Canada's waters should be the goal, especially if demand for food continues to grow as projected.

While the speakers provided diverse views on the critical issues facing food production in Canada and globally, they all agreed political will and action is the missing link. Technology and education is key for water conservation. However, without adequate governance to provide vision and implement mechanisms for sustainable management, water and food security will remain a risk to business and people in Canada.

Schweigert?s 11-year-old son was her biggest critic: ?He said, ?I love you, but I?m embarrassed for you right now.??

Some feel that the idea is a bad one. ??Marriage is about union, it?s about partnership, most of all, it?s about compromising on and sharing the things in your life that are hard to compromise on or sharp to deeper, more personal elements like beliefs, emotional vulnerabilities, and bank accounts,? said Cindy Rosen.

Self-marriage, to some, is an oxymoron. Singlehood means freedom, marriage means enclosure. Both can have serious value and can be cozy and wonderful,??but getting married to yourself feels strange to most. ? Why not just embrace the glory of being single and live an awesome life full of not fighting over the covers or smelling someone else?s weird smells? And have a party to celebrate it! Qquidditch takes off: Turning a fictional game into a real sport

ScienceDaily (Mar. 5, 2012) ? Muggle Quidditch match between University of Leicester and Keele University teams will be first in the UK played according to formal IQA rules

University of Leicester students will travel to Keele next month to compete in Muggle Quidditch -- the real life version of the fictional sport featured in JK Rowling's famous Harry Potter novels. The game, against rivals Keele University, will be the first inter-university game in the UK played to the official International Quidditch Association (IQA) rulebook.

The University of Leicester's Muggle Quidditch club was formed by Jack Hill, a second year Ancient History and History student, after he read about the sport being played by other UK students.

Muggle Quidditch was invented in the United States, where it is already hugely popular, and the sport is gaining momentum in the UK and Europe. Although casual matches have been played in the UK before, the Leicester vs. Keele encounter represents a step towards the more serious rankings and competitive games played by American universities.

Jack Hill said: "I formed the Quidditch club because Leicester didn't have one, and it's something that's really taking off in Unis around the UK. We've seen a massive interest in it -- we've signed up forty people."

"Our deputy chair Harry Wells is friends with someone at Keele University and they got together and arranged the match."

"We decided to play by IQA rules so that we can connect in a way with our American counterparts and truly capture the spirit of Quidditch. One of our long term aims is to compete as the first UK team in the Quidditch World Cup which is held annually. So naturally IQA rules would enable us to achieve this in the long run. "

Magical Quidditch involves flying around on brooms, so to adapt it for Muggle (non-magical) play required some creativity on the part of its American pioneers. Players grasp a broom between their legs and try to score points by shooting volleyballs through hoops.

The snitch -- a magical golden ball with wings -- is replaced by a person all in yellow with a tennis ball in a sock tucked into their belt. Players chase the snitch around the pitch and surrounding areas to score extra points and end the game.

Leicester students are enthusiastic about the sport's benefits. Maryna Danny, one of the club's founding members, said: "It's really good fun, and you meet all sorts of people. There're lots of girls -- we have more girls than boys." Muggle Quidditch is a mixed sport, with male and female players taking to the pitch together.

The University of Leicester Muggle Quidditch club sorts members into houses, inspired by the house system at the fictional school Hogwarts.

"At our first big meeting, we got a sorting hat," said James Bloomfield, a first year Psychology student who joined the club after seeing it on a social media website. "The whole idea of being sorted into houses just adds a nice social element to it. It's great fun."

Holly Roberts, student development officer at the University of Leicester Students' Union, said: "It is great that students are setting up different, unique societies. I hope the Muggle Quidditch Society keeps playing matches and expands into a fully fledged society that has longevity here at the University of Leicester Students' Union."

The match against Keele University will take place on Saturday 10 March 2012.

Kickback's a King Street Institution ? Springfield Brew Crew

Ten years ago your good beer choices in Jacksonville were restricted. You had a choice of going to any neighborhood bar and slugging back a bottle of watered-down, tasteless brews brought to you by the mega-breweries, or you could go to River City Brewing Company on the south bank for something a little better and definitely local brewed. Back then Ragtime was open in Atlantic Beach and Seven Bridges had beers on Southside Boulevard ? but, they are corporately owned by the same company that runs the Gordon-Biersch restaurants. So, I say again, good beer was very hard to find in Jacksonville.

Fast forward to 2012 and your choices have literally exploded. There are literally scores of restaurants around the First Coast serving quality craft beer both on tap and by the bottle from the beaches to the west side. Nothing illustrates this explosion of craft beer goodness than the King Street district of Riverside/Avondale. This once blighted and crime-ridden area of Jacksonville was the home of corner drug dealers and prostitutes. But, over the past few years the area has been transformed by an influx of beer-centric, restaurant, and entertainment venues. It is no longer a scary area of town, it is now an area some are dubbing; The King Street Brewery District.

The area?s transition from drug-infested Hell hole to bustling entertainment district seemed to hit high gear when in 2005 Kickback?s appeared and a new standard was set for the area. At a recent city Land Use and Zoning committee hearing, the owners of Kickback?s emphasized the struggles they endured during the first months of the establishment being open. Steve Flores, one the owners, recounted tales of chasing drug dealers down alleys, over fences, and through streets to rid them from near his property.

Today Kickback?s serves as an anchor for the busy district. Most evenings you will find the establishment buzzing with conversation and full of patrons enjoying some of the 84 beers on tap and hundreds of bottled beers available. The food brings the crowds in too, though. With an eclectic mix of comfort foods (they have Ramen Noodles, Spaghetti O?s, and corn dogs on the menu along with more traditional fare) and pub fare all served with a home-cooked feel. But, it is not just the food and drink that pack the crowds into this King Street institution. People come for the ambience, the sense of belonging, the knowledgeable staff, and the cheerful attitudes.

On weekends, Kickback?s is a hive of activity and, at times, a challenge to get into. The packed interior is filled with a cacophony of voices all talking, laughing, and enjoying the weekend. Navigation from one side of the pub to the other is a bit of a challenge too, since the tables are so close together and always full. Around midnight, an influx of partiers arrives from nearby restaurants and breweries. Most are only open until 11:00 or midnight at the latest. And since the King Street community of workers, residents, and regulars is so tight knit, a new round of hellos, handshakes, and squeals of delight at seeing old friends follows the influx.

The interior of Kickback?s is a shrine to the marketing of the world?s favorite beverage, beer. The walls are lined with empty beer bottles hanging from eye-bolts and strung on rods. Other walls are festooned with metal beer signs, rock memorabilia, and a large chalkboard listing all the beers currently available on tap. From the rafters, hundreds of tap handles hang from threads embedded in the exposed wooden beams. The doors are heavy, carved wood reminiscent of the type of doors you would find in Europe?s oldest Public Houses. The bar is packed with the 84 tap handles and spigots that have made Kickback?s a favorite among beer freaks.

At any time one could enter into the beer Nirvana on King Street and find several hard-to-find brews such as HopSlam from Bell?s or Dogfish Head 120 Minute IPA. You may find an interesting import like Schneider Weisse Tap X Mein Nelson Sauvin, a special edition brew created in Germany for ABT Cafes in Holland. Or, since Flores is a Belgian beer enthusiast, you might an exceptional Belgian like Kasteel Cuvee Du Chateau.

In the near future the owners of Kickback?s, Flores and business partner Ed Salem, are planning on building a new restaurant next door to the existing establishment. The new place will sport a Steam Punk theme and share an expanded kitchen with Kickback?s. In addition the restaurant, named Gooslepipes and Guttyworks, will feature a separate Belgian basement bar and beer storage catacombs.

In the long history of exceptional beer bas and pubs that have come and gone in the city of Jacksonville, Kickback?s has all the signs of being one with real staying power. Flores and Salem have built something special, a magical place that makes patrons feel welcome. If the enthusiastic crowds that pack into it are indication, the new restaurant will do just as well. We sure hope so.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) ? A wrinkle in his early campaign filings could leave Republican presidential hopeful Rick Santorum without almost a third of the available Ohio delegates even if he wins Super Tuesday's primary election.

Santorum, who took a campaign swing through the state Friday, has already forsaken nine delegates by not being on ballots in three Ohio congressional districts. Each district merits three delegates.

Party officials said Friday the problem goes deeper.

Santorum failed to file a full complement of delegates in six additional districts, said central committee member Bob Bennett. The holes add up to another nine delegates, for a total of 18 out of the 63 up for grabs. Santorum also did not file all 18 of his at-large delegates.

"He may very well leave delegates on the sidelines," Bennett said. "Say he would win 70 percent of the state. He doesn't have that many delegates."

Ohio Republican Party spokesman Chris Maloney says party rules call for appointing a three-member Committee on Contest to decide what to do with the unallocated delegates. That panel's recommendation would go back to the GOP's state central committee for a final ruling.

"The leftover delegates will be considered unallocated, and the presidential campaigns will be able to file a contest with the GOP to claim them," Maloney said.

An email was not immediately answered seeking comment from the Santorum campaign.

On a February stop at the Ohio Statehouse, Santorum said he didn't view not being on the ballot in three Ohio congressional districts as an impediment to his campaign.

The party doles out 48 delegates from the March 6 primary based on how well candidates do in each of Ohio's 16 congressional districts. The other 18 delegates are awarded at large.

Ryan Williams, a spokesman for the rival campaign of former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, criticized the lack of delegates.

"Rick Santorum has failed to get on the ballot in Virginia, has failed to file full delegate slates in Tennessee, New Hampshire and Illinois, and has failed to submit enough delegates in several Ohio congressional districts," he said in a statement. "The fact that he cannot execute the simple tasks that are required to win the Republican nomination proves that Rick Santorum is incapable of taking on President Obama's formidable political machine."

Santorum filed two of three delegates in Ohio's 3rd, 8th, and 12th congressional districts and one of three delegates in the 4th, 10th, and 16th districts.

Bennett said Santorum didn't file alternates in all those districts, but where they're available he believes Santorum should be allowed to use them if he wins.

"I think that common sense would say that if he carries a district, you're going to give him the ability to have all three delegates (by using alternates)," Bennett said. "That's my opinion. You'd have to check with other people because there are going to be a whole variety of opinions on that."
