Yanks GM: Possible A-Rod could miss entire season

NEW YORK (AP) ? Yankees general manager Brian Cashman says it's possible third baseman Alex Rodriguez could miss the entire season while recovering from hip surgery.

Cashman says "there's no guarantees in this stuff" that Rodriguez will be able to play this year.

The 37-year-old Rodriguez had surgery on his left hip last week. The team said the rehabilitation time was expected to be six months, which would sideline the star slugger until the All-Star break.

On Friday, Cashman said it was possible A-Rod could be out all year.

"Yeah," Cashman told WFAN radio. "I think because (of) the serious nature of the surgery and the condition that he's trying to recover from, you know, there is that chance."

"I can't say it's not possible that he won't be back," he said.

The Yankees signed free agent Kevin Youkilis during the offseason to play third base while Rodriguez is out.

Cashman said Rodriguez is doing everything "in his power to put himself in the position to get back and be healthy and productive."

"Best case scenario, yeah he should be back," Cashman said. "Worst case scenario, he won't be back, or there might be something in between."

A 14-time All-Star, Rodriguez hit .272 with 18 home runs and 57 RBIs in 122 games last year. The three-time AL MVP was benched in three of nine postseason games and pinch hit for in three others, batting just .120 (3 for 25) with no RBIs in the playoffs.

Rodriguez had surgery on Jan. 16 to repair a torn labrum and reshape a bone to alleviate an impingement. He has 647 career homers and is due $114 million over the next five years as part of his record $275 million, 10-year contract.

NOTES: RHP David Robertson and the Yankees reached a one-year deal, avoiding arbitration. The reliever had asked for $3.55 million and the team offered $2.85 million.

Hoffman does divas in directing debut 'Quartet'

TORONTO (AP) ? At least Dustin Hoffman is honest when asked why it took him so long to make his directing debut.

"I don't know," Hoffman said.

The 75-year-old Hoffman went behind the camera for "Quartet," starring Maggie Smith, Tom Courtenay, Billy Connolly and Pauline Collins as aging British opera divas at a retirement home for musicians who put aside past differences for a reunion concert.

"Quartet," which premiered at last September's Toronto International Film Festival, opened in a handful of theaters Jan. 11 and expands to wider release Friday.

Hoffman always wanted to direct, optioning stories, working on scripts, developing projects. He even started out to direct the 1978 ex-convict drama "Straight Time," in which he also was starring. Hoffman cast the film, worked on the script with several writers and said he "even got myself secreted into San Quentin ? which is another story ? in a convict's outfit for about five hours before I got found out."

Clearly, it was Hoffman's passion project, but as he began watching dailies of the footage he had shot, he lost confidence and "fired myself" as director. Hoffman turned to old friend Ulu Grosbard, who had directed him in "Who Is Harry Kellerman and Why Is He Saying Those Terrible Things About Me?", to finish "Straight Time," but it wound up being an acrimonious shoot as Hoffman continued to try to co-direct and their friendship chilled.

"Between that one and now, I don't know. I worked on stuff, I've developed stuff and talked myself out of it for whatever reason," Hoffman said in an interview at the Toronto festival.

"People will say, 'Well, you didn't do too badly, but nevertheless, we all would like to go back. I mean, it just goes under the heading of, I should have done this a long time ago. ... I should have, should have, should have. I should not have gone into acting. I should have stayed and become a jazz pianist and worked at it until I was good enough. That's the thing I most regret.

After "Straight Time," it took more than 30 years for Hoffman, a two-time Academy Award winner for "Kramer vs. Kramer" and "Rain Man," to try directing again. After finishing production on the 2008 romance "Last Chance Harvey" in London, Hoffman told cinematographer John de Borman to let him know if any interesting scripts came his way for the actor to direct. Soon after, de Borman called Hoffman about "Quartet," which had been adapted by screenwriter Ronald Harwood from his stage play.

Hoffman read it on the plane flying home and was hooked. While his lead players are actors, Hoffman filled up the retirement home with real aging opera singers, "people who had performed in places like La Scala, but no one has rang their phone or knocked on their door in 20 years," he said.

"They're a special breed of people. Everything is heightened. I do think they're superhuman," Hoffman said. "They're like an exaggeration, kind of, of actors. I mean, we're all horny bastards but they're off the charts. And they're detached from themselves. 'How are you doing today, Maurice?' He says, 'The voice isn't good.' Not my voice. It's THE voice."

Just like his aging opera stars, Hoffman has found his acting choices diminishing as he ages. A stage star in his 20s, Hoffman hit it big in Hollywood at age 30 with "The Graduate" and had a solid run of leading roles well into his 50s.

Inevitably, he has fallen back mostly on secondary roles in his 60s and 70s.

"I think supporting roles by definition are two-dimensional. You can't put the third dimension on it, you don't have the screen time to go home and see what their life is like," Hoffman said. "They're supporting the three-dimensional characters, and yes, I guess you do miss that, because you got used to trying to peel that onion in terms of those lead characters that you played."

The exception to losing out on lead roles as actors age "would be people that carry the gun. The people that hold the gun have a longer lifespan," Hoffman said. "John Wayne hung in there, Sean Connery hung in there. If you're an action star, the gun is a phallic symbol. It's the last thing to age."

DENVER ? Colorado?s two Democratic senators are pushing back at a Denver Post story Thursday that reported they are waffling on supporting legislation to ban assault weapons due to political concerns.

In December, roughly a week after the Newtown shooting that killed 20 first-graders, Sen. Mark Udall and Sen. Michael Bennettold?FOX31 Denver that they wanted to see a new ban on assault weapons.

?I?ve come to the conclusion that military style weapons really don?t have any place in our society,? Udall said. ?We ought to reinstate the assault weapons ban that served us well for 10 years from 1994 to 2004.?

Bennet followed suit the same day with a statement of his own calling for a comprehensive approach.

?The shooters in Aurora and Newtown should not have had access to the guns or magazines they used,? Bennet?s statement read. ?I believe a combination of improved access to mental health services, restrictions on certain weapons intended for the battlefield, and elimination of the gun show loophole are sensible steps that can reduce our children?s risk.?

On Thursday, a few hours after Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-CA, rolled out her revamped legislation to ban assault weapons, the Denver Post?s Allison Sherry tried to find out if Udall and Bennet were on board.

Both senators?addressed?the need to find a balance that also works for sportsmen and stopped well short of saying they will support the specific legislation, which would permanently outlaw more weapons than the 1994 ban, which, unlike the new proposal, had a sunset provision that took affect 10 years later.

Sherry termed the apparent change in position as ?confounding?.

But both staffers for both Udall and Bennet insisted Friday that they are simply looking over the specific legislation introduced Thursday, and that, while they are indeed ?uncommitted? on Feinstein?s bill, their position in favor of a general ban on assault weapons has not changed.

?First and foremost, Sen. Bennet?s concern is that we find solutions that will be effective,? said the senator?s spokesman, Adam Bozzi, on Friday. ?He has already called for an assault weapons ban. He?s going to take a serious look at this specific bill, which was introduced yesterday ? as he will with other bills when they are proposed ? before he decides which he?ll support.

?His concern is that we find solutions that will be effective and he?ll look into data that demonstrates how this will help limit or stop these events.?

Udall?s office also responded to FOX31?s request for a clarification.

?Sen. Udall has clearly said that he believes an assault weapons ban should be considered as part of a comprehensive solution to reduce gun violence,? said Mike Saccone, the senator?s spokesman. ?But details matter. He is thoughtfully reviewing the legislation introduced yesterday, which is different from the 1994 ban, to determine if it conforms to Colorado and the West?s heritage of safe, responsible gun ownership.?

Bennet and Udall have not been among the more outspoken lawmakers pushing for gun control following the Newtown shooting.

Colorado Rep. Ed Perlmutter, D-Golden, is co-sponsoring the House version of Feinstein?s assault weapons ban. Thursday, at the elaborate press conference to introduce the legislation, Perlmutter read a letter from the family members of seven victims of the Aurora theater shooting who want lawmakers to ban assault weapons.

Also, Rep. Diana DeGette, D-Denver, is sponsoring a ban on high-capacity magazines in the House.

But unlike those two lawmakers from safe Democratic districts, Udall and Bennet represent all of Colorado, a western state with a long tradition of gun ownership but also a state that is shifting left politically.

A survey?released?Monday from Project New America and pollster Chris Keating found that 61 percent of Coloradans support a ban on assault weapons, and that other gun control proposals have even higher support in the state.

CDC Urges MDs to Give More Antiviral Treatment for Flu Cases ...

The Centers for Disease Control is urging doctors to prescribe antiviral medications to high-risk patients suspected of having the flu, even without a positive test. When given within 48 hours of symptoms appearing, antivirals like Tamiflu?or Relenza can ease symptoms, shorten illness, and prevent serious complications.

Clinicians are not prescribing antiviral medications as often as in previous years, even though the 2013 flu season is causing more hospitalizations and deaths according to government figures. Complications from this year?s predominant flu strain are especially high among the elderly, causing half of hospitalizations and 90% of deaths so far.

With a sharp increase in both hospitalizations and deaths in the 2^nd week of January, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) issued a physician advisory urging use of antivirals?for more?people?especially those at high risk?as soon as?flu symptoms appear.

?When given promptly, they work,? CDC Director Thomas Frieden, MD, told a Jan. 18^thpress briefing. ?They can reduce symptoms, shorten the duration of illness, and prevent serious complications including hospitalization and death.?

Frieden also?advised clinicians not to wait for test results or a positive ?rapid flu test? when probably flu appears in people?at high risk for complications: anyone over age 65 or under age 2, or having any ongoing serious illness (including cancer survivors no longer in treatment).

Only halfway through the flu season

The number of influenza-related hospitalizations and deaths will rise in the coming weeks even as the ?national average of new cases begins to slow, Frieden warned, partly because there is a lag time between when flu hits and when complications like pneumonia appear.

And even though flu rates are leveling out in much of the east and south, the outbreak is just beginning in California, Arizona, Hawaii, and Nevada. ?Folks out West, you still have most of the flu season yet to come,? Frieden said.

What this means for you:

• Experts are still strongly recommending that anyone over 2 years old should get a flu shot for protection?of you and others?over the next several months.
• Even if you got vaccinated, you can still get a strain of influenza.
• If you begin to have flu symptoms and are ?high-risk? or have contact with high-risk people, you should get antiviral medication with 48 hours. (High risk includes cancer survivors, even if you?re no longer in treatment. Even if it?s later than 2 days, you might still benefit, so call your doctor.)
• Flu symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches.
• You are contagious to anyone within 6 feet until you have been without a fever for 24 hours. ?Stay home.

Jon Heyman reports that the Mets have signed Sean Marcum. It?s a one-year deal, pending a physical.

Marcum, who is 31, posted a 3.70 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 109/41 K/BB ratio in 124 innings last year. He missed a large chunk of time with a right elbow injury, but that obviously didn?t scare off anyone.

Several teams, including the Rangers, Padres, Pirates, Royals, Twins and Indians had shown interest in the former Brewers? starter. The Mets getting him bolsters a rotation that was already looking pretty good, with Matt Harvey, Johan Santana, Jon Neise and Dillon Gee. ?If the Mets are to do anything in 2013, it seems, it will be on the back of solid pitching.

Florida squatter claims ownership of $2.5 million mansion

The $2.5 million Boca Raton mansion being inhabited by Andre "Loki" Barbosa (Google Street View)Thomas Jefferson once said, ?If you want something you?ve never had, you must be willing to do something you?ve never done.? But one Florida man says he?s the rightful owner of a $2.5 million mansion because he walked through the front door and never left.

The Orlando Sentinel reports that 23-year-old Andre ?Loki? Barbosa is a squatter trying to cash in on a Florida law which says an individual may claim ownership of a property if they have lived there for seven years.

Sunrise real estate lawyer Gary Singer told the paper Barbosa is arguing that a Florida law known as ?adverse possession? applies to him. The foreclosed, 7,522-square-foot property has reportedly been empty for about 18 months.

Barbosa reportedly filed his "adverse possession" paperwork in July 2012.

And the idea of a random stranger moving into the upscale Boca Raton neighborhood isn?t sitting well with the other, paying residents.

"This is a very upsetting thing," neighbor Lyn Houston told the Sentinel. "Last week, I went to the Bank of America and asked to see the person in charge of mortgages. I told them, 'I am prepared to buy this house.' They haven't even called me back."

According to reports, no one saw Barbosa enter the property, so police have been unable to forcibly remove him from the 5-bedroom home. For their part, Bank of America says they are following a legal process to reclaim the property, sending a request for an eviction notice to the local court.

"The bank is taking this situation seriously and we will work diligently to resolve this matter," BofA spokeswoman Jumana Bauwens told the paper.

A Facebook page listed under Barbosa?s name has been chronicling the situation, referring to the disputed property as ?Templo de Kamisamar.? A recent post claiming to be from Barbosa declares, ?A successful man is one who can lay a firm foundation with the bricks others have thrown at him. I've failed over and over and over again in my life and that is why I succeed.?

The Sentinel reports that Barbosa has also placed a notice on the front window of the property declaring himself the, "living beneficiary to the Divine Estate being superior of commerce and usury."

Interpol: We'll recover art stolen in Dutch heist

BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) ? The head of Interpol says he believes police will retrieve valuable paintings that were stolen from a museum in the Netherlands last year, including works by Picasso, Monet and Matisse.

Dutch detectives and a prosecutor are currently in Romania to investigate the possible involvement of three men? arrested Monday in Romania? in the Oct. 16 theft from Rotterdam's Kunsthal gallery of seven extremely valuable paintings.

Interpol Secretary General Ronald K. Noble said Thursday he is confident the works will be recovered.

Romanian police and Noble declined to provide more information citing the sensitivity of the case.

"The people involved are probably watching " this press conference, Noble said.
