The report gives a bullish outlook in 2013 and 2014 for eight of 14 commodities it evaluated. Estimated two-year gains range from 3.05% to 17.3%.
Money Morning?Global Resources Specialist Peter Krauth agrees most commodities will perform well. In fact, he projects even higher growth than Morgan Stanley?s outlook.

?With central banks on their virtually uninterrupted fiat money-printing spree bound to continue for the next few years, hard assets remain a great place to be,? Krauth says. ?That being said, some commodities will undoubtedly do better than others.?
Investing in Commodities: The Outlook for 2013-14
Here?s the Morgan Stanley report rundown on eight commodities headed for price gains:
- Aluminum: Further infrastructure- and construction-related stimulus from?China?should move prices up in 2013. But the current level of supplies and high production capacity will put a floor on prices in 2014.
Aluminum ended 2012 at $2,087/metric ton. The projection for 2013 and 2014 is $2,300/metric ton ? a 10.21% increase from the end of 2012.
- Copper:?Growth in the supply of copper will be slow over the next five years and demand should increase, especially from China as the country?s infrastructure and auto markets stabilize.
Copper ended 2012 at $3.61/pound. The 2013 projection is $3.90/pound, up 8.03% from 2012. The 2014 projection is $3.72/pound, up 3.05% from 2012.
- Nickel:?Nickel remains at mid-2009 lows due to a growing oversupply and weak demand, but should rebound over the next two years.
Nickel ended 2012 at $17,448/metric ton. The 2013 projection is $18,300/metric ton, a 4.88% increase from 2012. The 2014 projection is $19,800/metric ton, up 13.48% from 2012.
- Zinc:?A sharp drop in 2012 production in China helped cut into an oversupply of zinc that dates to the financial crisis of 2008-2009. And if China?s new leadership supports infrastructure growth, that will boost zinc prices as well.
Zinc ended 2012 at $2,040/metric ton. The 2013 projection is $2,200/metric ton, an increase of 7.84% from 2012. The 2014 projection is $2,300/metric ton, up 12.75% from 2012.
- Gold:?The Federal Reserve?s?QE3, combined with the European Central Bank?s unlimited bond-purchasing program, will continue to push the yellow metal higher, but lowered demand could limit prices in 2014.
Gold?ended 2012 at $1,665/ ounce. The 2013 projection is $1,853/ounce, up 11.29% from 2012. The 2014 projection is $1,800/ounce, up 8.11% from 2012.
- Silver:?Production at mines has stalled since 2011 and demand should continue to increase, especially for use in electronics and jewelry.
Silver?ended 2012 at $30/ounce. The 2013 and 2014 projection is $35/ounce, an increase of 16.67% from 2012.
- Platinum:?Supply issues in South Africa that eliminated the surplus of platinum, coupled with strong industrial demand, should keep this metal moving higher.
Platinum ended 2012 at $1,524/ounce. The 2013 projection is $1,715/ ounce, up 12.53% from 2012. The 2014 projection is $1,785/ounce, up 17.13% from 2012.
- Sugar:?A global surplus of sugar, due to higher-than-expected production from Brazil and India, should prevent major changes in prices for the next two years.
Sugar ended 2012 at 19.2 cents/pound. The 2013 projection is 19 cents/pound, down 1.04% from 2012. The 2014 projection is 20 cents/pound, up 4.17% from 2012.
5 Commodities That Could?Really?Outperform
Krauth agrees with Morgan Stanley?s commodities team that gold is the safest and best commodity going forward.
But he expects the highest return from?silver prices.
His 2013 price targets are $2,200/ounce for gold, which would be up 32.13% from the end of 2012, and $54/ounce for silver, for an 80% increase.
Both of these increases will be spurred by the inflationary actions of central banks, strong investor demand and decreased supplies. Krauth expects silver to outperform gold because of the added demand from its various industrial uses, and its low price compared with gold.
Krauth also sees higher prices for platinum and palladium.
Increased use of platinum and palladium in automobiles is expected to help drive consumption of the metals up 7% ? 8% this year, Krauth said. But ongoing labor problems in Africa, which produces most of the world?s platinum and palladium, will reduce supply of the metals, he said.
Krauth predicts the price of platinum will rise to $1,850/ounce in 2013. He foresees palladium, now trading at about $725/ounce, rising to $800 this year.
Copper, Krauth forecasts, will rise above $4/pound this year.

MIDLAND CITY, Ala. (AP) ? Jimmy Lee Dykes moved to a rural Alabama neighborhood on a rutted red clay road more than a year ago. It didn't take long before he had developed a frightening reputation as a volatile man with anti-government views who threatened his neighbors at gunpoint and was viciously violent to wandering pets.
Multiple neighbors said Dykes, a 65-year-old retired truck driver, was the man suspected of boarding a school bus near his home, killing the driver and taking a 5-year-old boy hostage to begin a standoff that entered its second full day Thursday.
The neighborhood near Midland City, population 2,300, remained under siege after the Tuesday shooting, with the suspect and child holed up in a bunker-type shelter on the man's property that was equipped with electricity, food and TV. Early Thursday, dozens of police cars and rental cars that had brought FBI agents to the site were gathered on the state highway at the clay road's entrance. Some police officers milled about, guns holstered.
Homes on the road had been evacuated after authorities found what they believed to be a bomb on the property. SWAT teams earlier had taken up positions around the gunman's property and police negotiators tried to win the kindergartener's safe release.
The situation remained unchanged for hours as negotiators continued talking to the suspect, Alabama State Trooper Charles Dysart told a news conference late Wednesday. Earlier in the day, Sheriff Wally Olson said that authorities had "no reason to believe that the child has been harmed."
Local TV station WDHN obtained a police dispatch recording of the moment officers first arrived at the site. On it, the officers are heard saying that they were trying to communicate with Dykes through a PVC pipe leading into the shelter.
Authorities gave no details of the standoff, and it was unclear if Dykes made any demands from the bunker, which resembled a tornado shelter.
State Rep. Steve Clouse, who met with authorities and visited the boy's family, said the bunker had food and electricity, and the youngster was watching TV.
At one point, authorities lowered medicine into the bunker for the boy after his captor agreed to it, Clouse said.
The standoff began after school Tuesday afternoon. Sheriff Wally Olson said the man shot the bus driver several times when he refused to hand over the child. The gunman then took the boy away.
"As far as we know there is no relation at all. He just wanted a child for a hostage situation," said Michael Senn, a pastor who helped comfort other traumatized children after the attack.
The bus driver, Charles Albert Poland Jr., 66, was hailed by locals as a hero who gave his life to protect the 21 students aboard the bus. Authorities say most of the students scrambled to the back of the bus when the gunman boarded and said he wanted two boys 6 to 8 years old.
But when the gunman went down the aisle, authorities said, Poland put his arm out to grab a pole near the front steps of the vehicle, trying to block the suspect. That's when authorities say the driver was shot four times before the gunman grabbed one child and fled.
Asked about Dykes, neighbors said he was a man who once beat a dog to death with a lead pipe, threatened to shoot children for setting foot on his property and patrolled his yard at night with a flashlight and a shotgun.
He had been scheduled to appear in court Wednesday morning to answer charges he shot at his neighbors in a dispute last month over a speed bump.
Mike and Patricia Smith, who live across the street from Dykes and whose two children were on the bus, said their youngsters had a run-in with him about 10 months ago.
"My bulldogs got loose and went over there," Patricia Smith said. "The children went to get them. He threatened to shoot them if they came back."
"He's very paranoid," her husband said. "He goes around in his yard at night with a flashlight and shotgun."
Another neighbor, Ronda Wilbur, said Dykes beat her 120-pound dog with a lead pipe for coming onto his side of the dirt road. The dog died a week later.
"He said his only regret was he didn't beat him to death all the way," Wilbur said. "If a man can kill a dog, and beat it with a lead pipe and brag about it, it's nothing until it's going to be people."
Dykes had been scheduled to appear in court Wednesday to face a charge of menacing some neighbors as they drove by his house weeks ago. Claudia Davis said he yelled and fired shots at her, her son and her baby grandson over damage Dykes claimed their pickup truck did to a makeshift speed bump in the dirt road. No one was hurt.
"Before this happened, I would see him at several places and he would just stare a hole through me," Davis said. "On Monday I saw him at a laundromat and he seen me when I was getting in my truck, and he just stared and stared and stared at me."

What's That Smell : Risk Management and Cleaning Car Lots ...
Risk management is important, even in a small business. Before retirement I ran a franchising company, and we franchised mobile car wash units. One of our major market segments were new car lots, and large used-car lots like CarMax. We also washed for many car rental agencies. Obviously, we would wash while these cars were lined up in rows, and sometimes you could look down the end of the row, and get yourself psyched out due to the number of cars you had to wash.
Indeed, we cleaned for companies like Daewoo, Hyundai, BMW as the cars were parked at the port after they came off of the ships and we also clean for auto auctions; in some cases there were in excess of 600 to 5000 cars to clean. And even with a crew of five, 10, or even 20 people it was absolutely overwhelming.
There were definite issues of fatigue, as the workflow progressed. And OSHA standards dictated that the pressure washing guns had to have a trigger release, so that if you dropped the high pressure washing gun, it could not whip around and hit you in the head, or allow the high pressure water to cut your eye apart. That makes sense correct, OSHA generally has rules and regulations to protect employee safety because they know there are hazards in the workplace, and this is one of them.
Nevertheless, we had one of our franchisee managers in Sacramento California develop carpal tunnel, and although he had a precondition from his work formally as a grocery store clerk, he lost use of his right hand. This is because he had to keep pressing the gun off and on as he was cleaning the cars, and if he held the gun on all the time he was still putting pressure on his wrist because the gun was spring-loaded, that way it would automatically shut off if he dropped, as per OSHA safety regs.
After this occurred what he would do is switch hands, and put a tennis ball in between the trigger and the plastic housing which encased the trigger to keep the gun on all the time. This prevented carpal tunnel from preventing him from working. Other franchisees and their employees eventually did the same thing. On one hand we had OSHA standards disallowing such practices, but in the real world and in the field the employees and the franchisees realized they had to overcome muscle cramps, pain, and potential future carpal tunnel and they had to come up with a solution, and that's what they chose.
Eventually we found that there were some manufacturers of pressure washing guns, they did not have to OSHA standards in mind, and these guns had a special lock mechanism or ring which would keep the trigger on all the time. Many of our competitors were using guns without triggers, everyone in the industry knows this is a problem. When you are considering risk management, reducing risks, and dealing with hazards, these are the kinds of things which you will have to decide in a small business. Please consider all this.
